The Monterey Peninsula is one of the most visited tourist regions in the United States. While most people refer to the entire area as Monterey, the region is actually made up of several small cities that include Marina, Seaside, Sand City, Monterey, Del Rey Oaks, Pacific Grove, and Carmel by The Sea. Just beyond the peninsula is the famed Big Sur Coast, a popular driving route along the Pacific Ocean. The population of all these communities is just over 100,000 people, and are all accessible by automobile in about 30 minutes.
